The programme is targeted specifically at individuals who wish to pursue a Bachelor's degree in the range of degrees within the Social Science discipline; but who do not meet the matriculation requirements to pursue same at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus. Students graduating from this programme with a 2.5 GPA will be guaranteed acceptance into any degree level programme within the Faculty of Social Sciences at The University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine Campus  .

Programme Structure

The programme is conducted over three (3) academic terms or one (1) academic year. Classes meet for three (3) hours per week for twelve (12) weeks for each course. Therefore, each course is taught for thirty-six (36) contact hours. The programme comprises of eight 3-credit courses and a non-credit mandatory course. Students are also required to complete Introduction to Entrepreneurship; this is a non-credit, mandatory course. It provides practical knowledge and to encourage small business development. The Introduction to Entrepreneurship course is structured as a series of workshops that would not require examination.

Year I, Trimester I

  • Foundation English and Communication Skills (3 credit hours)
  • Fundamentals of Management (3 credit hours)
  • Essential Psychology and Sociology (3 credit hours)

Year I, Trimester II

  • Fundamentals of Mathematics (3 credit hours)
  • Introduction to Economics (3 credit hours)
  • Introduction to Politics (3 credit hours)

Year I, Trimester III

  • Introduction to Financial Accounting (3 credit hours)
  • Professional Development (3 credit hours)
  • Introduction to Entrepreneurship (0 credit hours)

Total 24 Credit Hours

Students MUST pursue the courses in the specific terms identified above.

 

Entry Requirements

A minimum of five CXC passes, (General Proficiency) Grades I and II (Grade III accepted from June 1998 onwards) or five GCE O' Level passes, Grades A, B and C (or equivalent) including English Language and Mathematics.
