Academic Services Department at UWI-ROYTEC

The Academic Services department serves as the central office for all academic staff, academic planning, programme development and matters related to the academic policies and regulations at UWI-ROYTEC. The department builds on the academic strengths of UWI-ROYTEC to enhance the educational impact of its academic programmes on all of our students and stakeholders.

The department is involved in the recruitment, appointment, advancement and retention of all faculty, practicum supervisors and Subject Heads at the institution. We provide leadership in improving the curriculum, monitor the quality of teaching and learning, facilitate faculty professional development and training, and enforce the institution’s academic policies and regulations. We develop and improve our academic programmes to ensure alignment with the economic, social and cultural development of Trinidad and Tobago. We support students’ academic success through a responsive Academic Advising Model geared towards diagnosing student needs and providing practical advice.

 

Faculty Training

UWI-ROYTEC is committed to delivering high-quality, student-centred teaching and learning to all students across our physical and virtual classes. Through an intentional approach to faculty professional development and training, we encourage our faculty to be reflective practitioners who deliver the curriculum through a variety of teaching strategies that meet the needs of our diverse student population. Through the delivery workshops, webinars and other resources on pedagogy and andragogy, assessment, course development and online teaching, UWI-ROYTEC’s faculty are constantly exposed to best practices in the teaching and learning relevant to higher education. 

Academic Services also serves as an innovative hub where faculty can connect and learn from one another while engaging in reflective practice. The department is dedicated to providing faculty with resources that are designed to support and promote a culture of excellence and enhance student learning.

During the past year, faculty professional development and training focused on course development and teaching in the online environment. Professional development and training in these areas were especially timely and relevant given the current global COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring the successful transition to online course delivery.

UWI-ROYTEC remains on the cutting edge of innovation by developing relevant academic programmes that are support the economic, social and cultural development of Trinidad and Tobago. Through regular stakeholder engagement and research on local market needs, our programmes are focused on workplace readiness and developing the skills and competencies needed for success after graduation.

Our academic programmes are designed to be student-centred, placing the needs of students and their varying learning styles at the centre of the curriculum.  As such, courses are designed to be engaging, dynamic and relevant to contemporary Trinidad and Tobago. Your path to academic success at UWI-ROYTEC is designed to achieve a balance between knowledge, theory and applied learning, ensuring a learning experience that goes beyond the classroom!

 

Academic Advising

Academic advising is a central component of student life as it provides students with a clear understanding of how his/her educational path at UWI-ROYTEC is aligned with his/her career goals.  Academic advising serves to develop and enrich students’ educational plans in ways that are consistent with their goals and career plans, preparing them for lifelong learning in a global society. Moreover, academic advising fosters an environment where students can relay their academic challenges and difficulties that may be impeding their academic performance.

Academic advising at UWI-ROYTEC empowers students to achieve their academic and professional goals through both one-on-one student advising, and access to academic advising resources. Academic advising at UWI-ROYTEC is based on programmes and interventions that motivate students to desire and achieve success. Through one-on-one consultations with staff and faculty, students are encouraged to chart their academic progress in tandem with their academic performance and programme structure. We work closely with to assist students understand their role, rights and responsibilities as students, and the academic skills they need to be a successful UWI-ROYTEC student.
