Teacher trainees at UWI-ROYTEC develop the skills and dispositions that prepare them to become expert and compassionate primary school teachers who prepare children for the 21st Century.
This programme of study is recognised by the Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago (ACTT) and is approved by the Curriculum Division of the Ministry of Education.

Objectives and Career Paths
The B.Ed. for Primary School Teachers develops teachers who are reflective practitioners who practice an inclusive approach to teaching that recognises the diversity of children in the classroom. Students of this programme are culturally grounded in the Caribbean reality and inspired by the power of culture as an effective teaching and analytical tool. Graduates may apply to the Teaching Service Commission to be registered as a primary school teacher. Many private primary schools in Trinidad and Tobago recruit graduates of UWI-ROYTEC’s B.Ed. programme.
Programme Structure
This programme is offered both on a full-time and part-time basis and is delivered through a combination of classroom lectures and Practicum sessions where trainees develop and practice their teaching technique in primary schools across Trinidad and Tobago. Following the recommended programme structure allows students to complete the B.Ed. programme as follows:
- Full-time and Part-time students - Four (4) years

Entry Requirements
A minimum of five (5) CXC passes (General Proficiency), Grades I and II (Grade III accepted from June 1998 onwards) or five (5) GCE O' Level passes, Grades A, B and C or equivalent) including English Language and Mathematics.
Candidates who have successfully completed Teachers’ College training from a recognized institution may apply to complete the UWI-ROYTEC B.Ed. Primary.
Applicants may also be considered on the basis of their work experience, training and educational background as deemed relevant by the UWI-ROYTEC Admissions Committee to be the equivalent of the above for the purpose of study, and may be subject to an interview.
